The BMA and NHS commercialisation

The government is awarding contracts to large multinational companies to provide patient care on behalf of the NHS. These contracts are funded with taxpayers’ money, but much of the profit will not be re-invested in the NHS; some will go instead to shareholders. This means that public money is lost to the health service.

The BMA is against the commercialisation of the NHS. It wants the NHS to be a public service working co-operatively for patients, not driven by competition. It is actively campaigning for the NHS to be publicly funded, publicly provided and publicly accountable.

Have you been affected by market reforms?

NHS commercialisation is made possible by market reforms. Bu ‘market reforms’ we mean policies which increase the number of healthcare providers by allowing large multinational companies to bid for NHS contracts.
